Sermon: Pioneer Compassion
Jul 18, 2021 • Rev. Jim Hill • Mark 6:30-44
Memory verse: "Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble." (1 Peter 3:8)
Today's sermon compares Settler versus Pioneer Christians. Settlers value safety and security and fear risk and uncertainty. They view the church as a ‘safe-place’. In contrast, Pioneers value adventure and opportunity, and they are discontent with safety and security. For them, the church is a ‘launching pad’. When it comes to compassion, the settlers ask themselves, "What can I afford in time and resources? How much am I willing to put up with?" whereas pioneers focus on others, asking, "Who is in need around me? What needs to be done?"
