Sermon: From Start to Finish

Dec 25, 2021    Rev. Dean M. Davenport

From start to finish, the Bible is the story of God's plan of salvation through Jesus. Long before Magi traveled from the east or shepherds were surprised by angel hosts at night, prophets foretold a Messiah who would come to bring peace. In the book of Numbers, the oracle Balaam gives a prophecy about the coming of Christ. Isaiah's prophecies that "unto us a child is born, to us a son is given" are well known. The minor prophet Micah even has something to say, "But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days." (Micah 5:2)

And then we come to the Christmas account, recorded in both Matthew and Luke's Gospel. Jesus arrives, fulfilling the prophecies, surprising everyone. The words of Scripture continue to share the deep meaning of his arrival, and in 1 John 4 and Titus 2 we are reminded again that Jesus came to bring us love and salvation. Merry Christmas!
