Who Needs Refined and Purified?

The image of refining and purifying precious metals is common in the Scriptures. What does it mean to be refined and purified by God, though, and who is it that needs refining? Is it believers? Unbelievers? Them? Me? Whoever it is and however it works, Jesus is both the blacksmith and the fire who lovingly and compassionately refines and purifies us.
