The History of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church

A group of 65 dedicated Lutheran families gathered at H. J. Will Funeral Home on Six Mile Road for a service on December 12, 1976, with the desire to form a congregation to reach out with the Gospel message. On February 6, 1977 Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church became chartered with 108 communicant members and became a self-supporting congregation of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.

/files/misc pictures/cornerstone_Resized_300x222.jpgThe first church was dedicated on January 14, 1979, on a five-acre site purchased in 1977. Further expansion began with the addition of an education wing, dedicated on May 6, 1984. In order to keep pace with the rapid growth of the congregation, a new church seating 950 people was built in 1992. Additional office space, a library and expanded narthex was part of this project. Congregational membership has grown from 243 members in 1977, to almost 1,600 members in 2002.

With the desire to use every means possible to share God's word, COS opened a meta site or branch church in Canton in 1997. The purpose of this meta site was to duplicate the Livonia ministries in Canton. The Canton site grew to form their own congregation, now called Grace Lutheran Church, installing their own pastor on November 10, 2002.

Because of the growth in Livonia, /files/misc pictures/cornerstone 2_Resized_300x225.jpgat the same time the Canton ministry began, additional classrooms and offices were added to the Livonia campus. We have been blessed with people of dedication and zeal, with talents lying in many different areas. Our purpose remains the same today as it was in 1977 - to make disciples of people everywhere.

As we step into the future, we pray for God's added blessing, that we may continue to be strong and vibrant and have a history filled with his Spirit at work in these communities.
