Does it cost a family anything to participate? Do they have to sell anything?

There are no membership fees or application fees. COS families simply pay COS the face value for the scrip cards you order. The beauty of the scrip concept lies in the fact that COS members raise money simply by using their existing household shopping budget. Some families may enlist relatives, friends and neighbors to buy scrip. But unlike other fundraising programs, scrip families do not have to "sell" anything to raise money for their organization.

Can I use scrip to pay department store charge account balances?

A few retailers allow you to pay charge account balances with scrip, but generally speaking, most do not. Please check the retailers, via link above, for a current list of retailers and their guidelines in this area.

Two types of cards

  1. Regular gift cards - These are just like cards you'd buy at a participating retailer. (The only difference is that COS makes a profit.)  They have a face value and are only valid for that amount.  Therefore, when you decide to frequent that retailer again, you'd need to think ahead and get another gift card from COS. Remember to treat these cards as cash. (Important: COS nor Great Lakes Scrip Center can not be responsible for lost or stolen scrip cards.)
  1. Rechargeable gift cards - At this time, we have recharageable cards from three grocery retailers: Hiller's, Busch's and Kroger.  Initially, you will purchase a $5 gift card from COS. DO NOT THROW THESE CARDS AWAY.  When you get to the checkout, simply "recharge" the card with the desired amount. Note: This must be done before you begin ringing up your groceries. After that transaction, the cashier will ring up your groceries and you use the gift card as payment.  The grocery retailer keeps track every time you recharage the card and then sends COS a check for the funds that we've earned.  Another great perk is that you can use your check, debit or credit card to add funds to the rechargeable card.
